Letter to Petrol Retail contractors. COVID-19 interim training.

Dear All

As you will already be aware, the current social-distancing restrictions understandably prevent us delivering classroom-based training. Some accrediting bodies such as UKATA, CITB and BOHS have supported the engagement of video-conferencing platforms to enable you and your teams to still access tutor-led training remotely.

However, this has not been made possible by all awarding bodies and contractors who are required to work on or around a Petrol Forecourt will not be able to access SPA/UKPIA courses until the SPA office re-opens and classroom courses are able to resume.

In response to requests from several of our clients we will be running a number of ‘Virtual classroom’ courses over the coming days and weeks to give you and your staff access to the following:

  • > Refresher knowledge for those who’s SPA/UKPIA Safety Passports are due to (or have already expired)
  • > Initial knowledge for those about to embark on PFS work for the first time.

We recognise that:

  • > Contractors are facing the challenge of depleted teams when staff members have to self-isolate for a variety of reasons and that they may need to upskill other members of their teams or bring in new employees and prepare them to operate in a PFS environment.
  • > Site Owners/Operators cannot reduce the H&S standards and expectations of how their contractors operate in the current climate.

This interim solution that TTS is offering will give contractors access to essential PFS H&S compliance knowledge and give Site Operators reassurance that contractors who don’t hold a valid SPA/UKPIA card have received appropriate tutor-led PFS Health and Safety training.

Once we are able to resume our classroom courses and the SPA resume the issuing of the SPA/UKPIA Safety Passport cards then delegates can access the classroom courses they need (initial or Refresher) to attain their official SPA/UKPIA Safety Passports.

Our first Virtual Classroom course will be taking place on Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th April and places are limited.

COVID-19/Coronavirus update

[Updated 07.45 24/3/2020] Latest update…

In line with government advise we have suspended all face to face training courses with immediate effect.

This includes courses due to run today (Tuesday 24th March 2020).

Tersus Training Services Ltd’s priority is the safety and welfare of our staff, customers. Whilst we recognise that much of the training we deliver is critical to the operating safety of you and your customers we believe that the responsible action is to call a halt, for the time being, to any face to face activity. This includes:
– our open classroom training course program
– any in-house course at your company’s premises
– our Construction/Project HSSE Site audits
– Face to face Contractor Assurance Accreditation visits

Any of our activity that can be undertaken remotely via video conferencing will still be able to go ahead. Contact our team to find out how we can continue to support you and your workforce during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Please note that we have been approved by UKATA to run Asbestos Awareness and Refresher courses for Non-Licensed Asbestos (incl NNLW) via video conferencing. These are amongst a number of health and safety courses that we are offering to give you that live, instructor-led training but from the safety of your home.

We will continue to monitor the developments of this pandemic and the UK Government’s advice and guidance on limiting the spread of Coronavirus and will keep you updated here.

If you were due to attend a SPA/UKPIA refresher course to extend/renew your expiring safety passport card then please note that the SPA have reintroduced a 3-month grace period to allow those cards that expire shortly to still attend a Refresher course upto 3 months after your card expires.

We trust that the above information is helpful, and we thank you for your understanding and co-operation during the current situation. We will continue to take advice from Public Health England and the Government and keep this page updated as the situation unfolds.

If your company/organisation is interested in making the most of any potential downtime by undertaking online or ‘remote’ learning then please contact us.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our team:

We’ve been shortlisted!

Tersus Training Services are proud to say that they have been shortlisted as a finalist for the APEA Health & Safety Performance Award, for our PFS Site Auditing and Mentoring Program that we have developed for Artelia/Shell.

The benefits gained by independent scrutiny of health and safety performance have long been recognised. Artelia’s PMC responsibilities to Shell in the UK include the upholding of the highest standards of Health and Safety on project sites and, in addition to the auditing carried out by the internal Safety team, a program of external auditing had been carried out independently.

As with many internal or independent audit programs the auditing body simply focus on a compliance check list giving a 2-dimensional snap-shot of health and safety performance. The opportunity we recognised was to move auditing away from the ‘stick wielding’ perception of Health and Safety visits, looking to find fault and non-compliance, to not only engage with influential site staff to embrace and champion Health and Safety performance in their own work and that of those around them but to provide an insight into staff’s attitude towards Health and Safety.

We developed, in consultation with Artelia, an audit scheme that supports and promotes the key Shell Life Saving rules. A flexible document was created that could be tailored by the auditor to be applied appropriately to reflect the specific tasks and activities that were being undertaken on the day of the audit visit. The way that the audit is carried out engages the project and site management staff to ensure their compliance with Health and Safety regulations and industry best practice.

Whilst the audit may identify hazardous situations that could warrant an immediate intervention, incidences of non-compliance are treated as opportunities to learn and attain higher standards of health and safety. Our audit team use site visits to engage with all the personnel involved in activities on site and support managers and supervisors in their responsibilities for driving positive safety attitudes and behaviours.

One example of the positive feedback that we received from Artelia, on behalf of T1 client (Shell):

Following one specific visit, at which our auditor identified a hazardous situation and intervened to stop all works until the appropriate remedial action was undertaken, we received the positive appreciation of our approach to Health and Safety and the part we play in Artelia’s support of Shell’s prioritisation of Safety: “Paul’s action could very well have prevented a serious incident occurring and this is exactly what I wanted our relationship to achieve. Thank you.”

The winner of this category will be announced at the annual APEA awards on the 22 November.

Tersus Group acquired by Marlowe Critical Services

We are pleased to announce that the Tersus Group, comprising Tersus Consultancy Limited, Tersus Management Services Limited and Tersus Training Services Limited, has been acquired by Marlowe plc, who are a U.K. quoted public company providing support services for critical testing and maintenance services.

Marlowe plc. operates through three divisions, Water, Fire & Security and Air. Tersus Group will provide the compliance and testing requirements of the Marlowe Group and will be part of the Air division. The range of services provided by Tersus Group complement the critical services provided across the country by the Marlowe divisions.

The Tersus Training Services will remain unchanged so it is very much a case of “business as usual”, with no differences in personnel or operations and no impact on how our customers receive our services. However, with a new parent, there will be support for more resources and investment in systems and future development of new services and products.

The support of Marlowe plc will provide a stable base which will enable us all to take the business forward rapidly with a clear strategy and purpose.

We welcome this exciting move forward for the Tersus Group and we look forward to working with the Marlowe group.
